What Is a Markdown Image Link?
A Markdown image link is the shorthand syntax that tells a Markdown renderer to display an image. Instead of pasting a bare URL that shows up as plain text, you write an exclamation mark, alt text in square brackets, and the image address in parentheses. The renderer swaps that line for the actual picture.
Markdown image syntax
The text inside the square brackets describes the image for screen readers and appears if the file cannot load. Everything in the parentheses is the direct image URL — the hosted file itself, not a gallery or download page.
How to Create an Image Link in Markdown
You only need one hosted image URL. The generator above produces the URL and the Markdown syntax together, so there is nothing to type by hand.
- 1
Upload your image
Click the upload area, drag a file in, or paste an image from your clipboard. PNG, JPG, WEBP, and GIF are accepted.
- 2
Copy the Markdown snippet
Photo2URL generates the Markdown image link first. Use Copy Markdown so the full syntax lands on your clipboard.
- 3
Paste it where Markdown is rendered
Drop the snippet into a GitHub README, blog post, docs page, or any Markdown editor. The image renders from the direct URL.
Markdown
Embeds the image inline anywhere Markdown is rendered.
Direct URL
https://…/your-image.webpLinks straight to the file for chats, forms, and tools that take an image address.
HTML
<img src="url">Use the img tag where raw HTML is accepted instead of Markdown.
Where Markdown Image Links Work
Any renderer that supports standard Markdown will display the generated image link. These are the places developers and writers use it most.
GitHub READMEs
Repositories · issues · pull requests
Commit screenshots, diagrams, and badges into a README using the generated Markdown image syntax. GitHub fetches the direct URL and renders the image inline.
Documentation
Notion · Obsidian · docs sites
Add images to technical docs and notes without bundling asset folders. Paste the Markdown snippet and every renderer loads the same hosted image.
Blogs and CMSs
Static sites · Markdown posts
Markdown-first blogs accept the snippet directly. A CDN-backed image URL keeps posts fast without managing separate media uploads.
Markdown image link vs. HTML image tag
Both point at the same hosted file. Use the Markdown form wherever the editor renders Markdown, and the HTML form where raw markup is accepted. If you need a clickable image instead of a plain embed, generate an HTML image link with the HTML image link generator.
